Principal's Page

Dear Thomas J.  Kellar Middle School Family,

I am excited to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! I am honored to serve as the proud principal of Kellar Middle School. As we prepare to embark on another year, I am reminded of the importance of a strong parent and community partnership. We Need You and I welcome this opportunity to partner with you as we support our scholars with a fulfilling and rewarding middle school experience.

At Kellar Middle School we are fortunate to have a team of outstanding staff anchored by a very supportive Central Office Administration and Board of Education. Under the direction of Superintendent, Dr. Anthony Edison, the middle school is able to offer a variety of opportunities both academic and extra-curricular including the Saturday Fun Factory and the Summer Adventure Quest.

The staff and administration worked over the summer on further developing the student schedule and aligning our curriculum with the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts. The standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that instruction is effective. Throughout the year you will see and hear evidence of the alignment of our instruction with the Common Core State Standards.

Other Important Information:

•  Planners & Student Handbooks.  Each scholar will receive a Planner, a valuable tool to assist them with organizing their day and scholars and families will be receiving a student handbook. Please take a moment during the first few days/weeks of school to review the contents of the Planner and Student Handbook.

• Student Drop-Off. Parents electing to drive their child to school are required to use the “parent drop-off and pick-up area” which is located along the front of the school on Lydia Street. For safety reasons, scholars may not be dropped off in the bus/staff member driveway.

• Student School Day starts at 8:05 am. Scholars arriving after 8:10 am must be signed in by a parent or guardian.

• Uniforms. The student uniform consists of a dark blue, uniform material pant (Dickie’s style or dress slacks), and a dark blue or solid white shirt with a collar (polo style, dress shirt, or blouse). Scholars may wear solid navy blue or white sweaters/cardigans. Gentlemen are required to wear belts. Ladies may wear a solid, navy blue, knee-length skirt. Jeans, denim, jeggings, leggings, hoodies, and sweatshirts are prohibited. Please refer to the Student Handbook for additional information regarding the Dress and Uniform Policy.

Lastly, please join us for Open House on Tuesday, September 3rd at 5:30 pm. We will also have our first parent-teacher organization (PTO) meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd at 6:30 pm. I look forward to seeing you at these and other events during the school year. My staff and I are eagerly anticipating a fulfilling year of meaningful learning experiences. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
